Only you can see your favourites and sightings. They appear on your Explorer dashboard.

Hear the Cheetah

The zoo has not given us an approved recording of this animal yet, so nothing is played here. We never play a different animal’s sound and call it theirs.

We cannot promise that this animal will be out, active or easy to see when you visit. Animals choose where they spend their time, and some enclosures close for their care.

  • It is the only big cat that cannot roar. It chirps, purrs and barks instead.
  • It can run at over 110 km/h, but only for a short burst.

Looking After Them

How threatened it is: Vulnerable (checked in 2022). Numbers in the wild: decreasing.

The dangers they face

  • Losing the wide open spaces they need.

How people are helping

  • Zoos breed cheetahs together.
  • Some cheetahs are returned to the wild.
  • Farmers and conservationists work together to protect them.
